Herbal Preparations – Which natural herbal remedies are the most popular?

There are many different ways in which we can utilise the healing powers of herbs. You can choose herbal supplements in pill form, syrups, tinctures, teas, ointments, salves, etc. With so many options to choose from you are sure to find one method which is perfect for you. The best thing about each of these methods is that with the proper information and access to good ingredients you can create most of them at home.

Herbal medicine and remedies were meant to be simple and easy to do for everyone. Of course you cannot simply pick up garlic or ginseng and boil it thinking you are making an herbal tea, there are some rules and steps you need to follow. You need to know what you are doing and once you do it is very easy.

Herbal teas are made using one of two methods, infusions and decoctions. Which method applies depends on what kind of herb you use. (See Infusions Vs Decoctions) To make your own herbal tea all you need is the herb, water and equipment you will find in your kitchen cupboard. Easy!

Herbal syrups are one of the easier methods to make. All you need is your herb extract (can be tincture, can be herbal tea), honey or glycerine. That is it. Herbal syrups make a remedy more palatable and are often used to persuade children to take some of the less tasty herbs.

Herbal tinctures are another form of herbal preparation. A tincture is an alcoholic extract of an herb. Again the ingredients are very simple. All you need is the herb, fresh or dried and vodka. I recommend vodka because it has no taste of its own, only contains alcohol and water and is easily available all around the world. The extra benefits of using tinctures is that they last a very long time, are easy to take, are stronger than teas and only require small dosages. The downside is that they often taste terrible, but since you may only need to take a few drops it is usually quite bearable.

Herbal ointments
are becoming very popular as well and are easy to make at home. The term ointment can be interchanged with salve, you’ll come across both terms in your reading material. To make your own at home, you need your dried herbs, some olive oil and a small amount of natural beeswax. Once again you can see that there is not much too this, the method is also not difficult at all. Take a look in the Techniques section to find out more. Once you have mastered the technique you can play around with different combinations. You may wish to keep you ointments simple or you may wish to add the healing power of some essential oils. It is easy to tailor make your own preparation to suit your own individual needs.

Other easy preparations to make at home are body oils, herb vinegars, baths, compresses and poultices which are all as simple as the ones described above.
