Herbal Garden Sprays

Many of you have been posting about your gardening exploits, so I thought it’s time to post some herbal helpers to make your garden a bigger success.

For Aphids and Fungal Diseases

6 large rhubarb leaves
1 quart/1litre water
1 teaspoon of soap flakes

Finely chop leaves, add to a saucepan, cover and bring to a boil.
Remove from heat and leave to steep overnight.
Strain well.  Dissolve soap in a little hot water and add to rhubarb infusion.
Mix well. Bottle & label. Use once a week and more often if it’s a serious problem or if there is rain.

For Powdery Mildew

4 teaspoons of bicarb of soda
3 teaspoons of soap flakes
1 cup/250ml warm water
3 teaspoons of vegetable oil
40 drops tea tree oil
4 teaspoons vinegar

Mix bicarb, soap and water.
Add vegetable oil, tea tree oil and vinegar.
Bottle, label and store for use.
Use 3 – 4 tablespoons to 2 quarts/litres of water, spraying the tops of plants and bottom of leaves.
Note: Use a large jar for mixing as the bicarb & vinegar cause froth to bubble up.


To add vitamins & minerals

Place bunches of nettles in a large container, cover with water.
Cover with a lid and leave until well rotted. Strain to use.
Spray the entire plant including underside of leaves.


Personal Bug Repellent

2 1/2 teaspoons lemon-scented tea tree oil
1 teaspoon cedarwood oil
1 teaspoon patchouli oil
1/2 teaspoon manuka oil
2 teaspoons of vodka or witch hazel extract
grape seed or almond oil

Mix all oils. Pour into a labelled a 1fl oz/30ml bottle and shake well.
Leave for four days to potentize.
To use add 4 drops to a 2fl oz/60ml bottle, add 2 teaspoons of vodka or witch hazel extract and will with grape seed or almond oil.
Shake well before applying to exposed skin.


Pick me up for sick plants

Make 1cup/250ml of triple strengths infusion of chamomile flowers.
Leave to infuse for 24hrs.
Strain, then dilute with enough water to make a weak tea.
Spray entire plant including the underside of leaves.
To protect young plants from insects and caterpillars

Make 1cup/250ml of triple strengths infusion of elder leaves.
Leave to infuse for 24hrs.
Strain, then dilute with enough water to make a weak tea.
Spray entire plant including the underside of leaves.
To protect mature plants from caterpillars

2 cups finely chopped wormwood leaves
1 teaspoon soap flakes
1 quart/litre water
Simmer leaves for 30 minutes in a covered pot.
Stir and strain well.
Dissolve soap in the warm infusion.
Spray entire plant including underside of leaves.
General Health Spray

Equal quantities of southernwood, tansy, mint,
feverfew, chamomile, nettle,parsley, sage and borage

Place herbs in a large container cover with water and seal with a lid.
Leave until well rotted. Strain before use.
Spray entire plant including the underside of leaves to repel insects and give health to plants.
